Despite the cold, grey days—and scaffolding as the Hall is re-roofed– the garden has thrived. The next lines of the Robert Frost poem—Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour—remind us to enjoy every minute of the apple blossom and the tulips in their sea of forget-me-nots.
The Leaping Hare is celebrating Spring with our own asparagus and rhubarb, our Wyken Shetland lamb including our rare breed hoggets, year-old lamb which is prized for it richer flavour. And of course our wild venison. Spring is a bountiful farm-to-table and field-to-table time of year.
Oh, these tender and precious buds. The day after this photograph was taken we had a terrible frost and lost 50% of the 2017 crop. A week later another frost took 30% more. To lose 80% of the coming harvest is painful indeed. Our only solace: we have a good stock of our award-winning 2016 vintage.
Spring has arrived at Wyken with its golden greens, apple blossom and days that still call for sweaters. The arrival of the Paradis pottery from Sweden, especially the candle holders, seems like good timing. It is May but we need the cosiness and warmth of candlelit evenings.
